When my gym recently closed, I thought that would be the end of my early morning workouts forever. Why on earth would I get up when it is still dark outside to run or workout if it were up to me alone? Snooze, snooze and more snooze.
Before I knew it, my busy day was over and my kids (yet again) had gotten the best of me. Picture it: I’d be sitting on the couch with a class of white catching up on GoT at 9 PM when I should have been on the treadmill or doing Insanity. Another day, another workout skipped. Another opportunity to blow off some steam gone bye bye. I was guilty day in and day out of not making the time to exercise and making ridiculous excuses why! The gym kept me accountable since I paid for a membership and was extremely limited to what class times would work. I was starting to think that I would never set the 4:45 AM alarm again but then my BRB (Best Running Buddy) asked me to start running once or twice a week in the morning before work. I wondered if I would be able to stick with it but I was up for the challenge. We’ve been meeting at 5:15 AM, dark, cold, no matter and so far, so good. She keeps me accountable so that when the alarm goes off, I get up and go. I can’t leave my BRB hanging!
I am not a morning person so if I can find the motivation to get up and get moving, we all can. Seriously, I hate the way I feel when I wake up and realize that I MUST get out of bed. I hate being in a groggy slumber. I hate feeling grouchy. Those of you who know me know that I don’t use the word hate lightly so this is BIG. Snuggled up under the covers, warm and secure, the last thing I want to do is get up and start the chaos of my weekday routine. Even so, I know that the best way to ensure you don’t skip your miles is to get them in early. I’ve never said to myself, “I wish I hadn’t gotten up so early and gone on that run.” Ever. Even when the afternoon seems to drag on for an eternity and I am wondering how I will keep my eyes open for the rest of the day without an espresso IV, I am always glad I woke up early and got ‘er done.
I have found that even though waking up can be hard, I like starting my day while the world is still quiet. There is so little quiet in my life right now. And if that’s not enough, I get to spend some time with one of my favorite people. What a great way to start the day!
Want to get your miles done early? Find a friend, plan a route and enjoy the sunrise! Your morning chaos will be there waiting at the end of your run. I promise.
