My oldest daughter had her debut as a travel soccer player and it was miserable. It was unbearably hot and humid, and she was playing on a much bigger field than she was used to. The opposing team devoured us. I mean, as much as one U9 girls’ team can devour another during a “friendly” game. Let’s just say this. We didn’t score at all, and we lost count of how many goals the other team scored. To make it worse, my daughter played her heart out that day. She was all over the field and toward the end of the second half, the coaches pulled her from the game and made her lay down on the ground in fear that she may be suffering from heat stroke. It turned out she was fine, but this little scare did almost give me a stroke! I’m kidding (sort of).
My daughter was upset that the game didn’t go well, and the disappointment on her face broke my heart. I assured her that she played great and she should not let one game get her down. Then, my second grader looked up at me and told me that when she was out there on the field hurting and wanted to stop, she kept thinking to herself…I can do this! If mom can run for 4 hours without stopping, I can do this!
Those were some of the best words I have ever heard. My heart swelled with pride. To see one of my greatest accomplishments help my little
girl beast play a sport she loves was simply awesome.
As it turns out, I later learned my husband had given my daughter a pep talk before the game telling her to remember, if mommy can run a marathon, you can do anything out there on that soccer field. At first, I felt a tad disappointed that my daughter hadn’t thought of it on her own, but then I realized that if anything, I should be more touched. How lucky am I to have a husband who thought to use this during his pre-game pep talk and all the more special that it resonated with my daughter.
But seriously, all this proud mama sappy stuff aside, when did my baby girl turn into a legit athlete? It seems to have happened overnight. Competitive sports can be tough and kids can get hurt. I keep thinking, are we ready for this? I guess what I really mean is, am I ready?!
