One year ago I wrote about June 1, 1990 and the holiday born out of that horrible day for my family – I’m Alive Day. I wrote about how the past several years I have been remiss in celebrating, but in 2016 I was going to revive “I’m Alive Day” and celebrate again. And celebrate we did.
My husband took the day off of work so that he and I could go on a Treetop Trek adventure. We went on a canopy walk, across several zip-lines including a 600-foot zip across some wetlands, and traversed obstacles all while up high in the trees above our local zoo. We had a blast. Afterwards we had a leisurely kid-free lunch, hit up the store closing sale at Sports Authority, and then picked up the kids from camp and took them out for frozen yogurt. Our revitalized “I’m Alive Day” wasn’t my parents’ way to celebrate but it was a celebration of being alive.
We all need to rejoice about being alive and celebrate life, not just on our birthdays but other days too. Sometimes the hardest days we make it through are the most important to celebrate. We’ve made it around the sun another year. There is great beauty in simply surviving this rollercoaster of life; we should never forget to celebrate it.
Happy “I’m Alive Day” from our family to yours!
