Warmer weather has helped us embrace the outdoors. Once summer hits we start the day outside in our PJs and rarely make the move inside until darkness approaches. Our local trails are a great asset to our community that we enjoy exploring. However, my daughter is an only child at my house and therefore requests (more like demands!) to be carried ALL of the time. She is almost 4 years old and a solid 40 lbs, so something has to give. Even carrying her in a hiking backpack has started to become uncomfortable so we are left with only one option: Spring Training!
We have recently entered the world of Geocaching (https://www.geocaching.com/play). This live treasure hunt makes a game of seeking out hidden caches and leaving notes or small trinkets while also collecting new small treasures. It’s amazing how motivating inexpensive trinkets are for little ones! Erasers, bouncy balls, a rubber band shaped like a duck – really anything goes for little kids!
Now, to find the caches we use an app on our phones that shows your location along with the location of pinned hidden treasures. The app gets you close but you definitely have to remain attentive and vigilant in order to locate the pill bottles stuffed into a tree hole or Tupperware jammed under rocks and concealed with camouflaged tape. Some are HARD to locate, but that’s all part of the adventure. Since it keeps young legs moving forward, we’ll keep exploring!
On this particular hike we found the mother load of caches. It was an old ammunition box loaded with notes and goodies from fellow hikers who had come before us. It was fun to read notes left by hikers some 15 years ago.
Although Geocaching gets her legs moving for a solid mile, we still sometimes need a little help to end the hike. More training is in order! So we’ll be back out there this weekend, hiking & hunting all while secretly building up stamina and endurance. I hope to see you out there!
