When you’re feeling off balance everything just feels blahhhh. Nothing is connecting, going you’re way, sounds right. It even seems that you hit every red light in town or traffic jam on the highway on the way to work. Wtf universe. Sigh. Feeling “off” can just plain suck, because everything is thrown off when we feel this way. Our work life balance, our relationships and the plain “day-to-day” can seem so unattainable. As we are emerging out of the winter season, it appears that it is time to shed some of the “yucks” as I like to call them. When I talk to my kids, if they are feeling low or not quiet right, I tell them they have the “yucks”, grown folks can get the “yucks” too. Awareness is the key to turning “yucks” into “YAY”, here are a few techniques to shake off the winter doldrums and emerge into better balance for spring!
Recognize: As I said before, having awareness is a critical component to overall well-being and increased sense of self. When we can slow down and pinpoint within ourselves, “ok, what is happening here, why am I feeling so tired, so sad, so …” it is a start to moving towards a different path. You have to start somewhere!
Get grounded: Chaos. It can consume us and before we know it, we look up and can’t see, know what hit us and realize how we got “here”. Getting grounded is another step towards shaking off the “yucks”. Whatever that means to you. Here is a great grounding tip, which is a tactile sensory technique (I use this often). Take off your shoes and socks; allow your bare feet to get in touch with the surface. That’s it. Floor, grass, sand (the beach is my favorite), whatever works for you, the sensation of your bare feet connecting to the surface of the ground (earth), immediately grounds you. My children love, love this one (explains why they are constantly barefoot). Try it, you’ll love it. Another great way to get grounded is to go outside and just breathe or stop at your desk and just breathe. This takes only a few minutes and has long lasting results.
Simplicity: As we are gearing up into the spring season, this may be a tough one, however, it helps to keep things as simple as you are able too in times of the “yuckies”. Less is more, right? Remember that sea of chaos? Over commitment is often how we arrive there, and I don’t’ know about you but I would rather visit the sea of tranquility with a nice beverage? Am I right?
Remember: Try not to get lost and overthink. Most of time what we need is right in front of us or around us. I have blogged about this before, but remember your “why”. Your purpose for being on your daily grind, whatever that is for you. Remember it, hold it true in your heart and mind and return to it. It will always be there, just like a trusted and true old friend who when you see them it’s like you never left and you just pick up where you left off. Simply.
When you are feeling the “yucks” just know that it’s a process, we all go through it and emerge on the other side a new. Stay grounded, keep it simple and remember to look where you are planted. And most of all just breathe.
