RACE: Tooth Trot 5K Run/Walk
LOCATION: Melbourne, Florida
DATE: Saturday, January 30, 2016
LENGTH: 3.1 miles
RUNIT RATING: 2 tooth decorated pinwheels up!
My 9-year-old and almost 8-year-old boys joined me on a cool Florida morning to run the Tooth Trot 5K. This race is a fun, well-organized event, now in its 18th year, sponsored primarily by dentists. Proceeds from the race benefit a great cause, Give Kids A Smile.
Give Kids A Smile provides free dental care to children in need within Brevard County, Florida. All dental care is provided free of charge by member dentists and specialists of the Brevard County Dental Society (BCDS). The proceeds raised by the Tooth Trot aids the BCDS in providing chair side education, preventative and restorative care to children who do not have access to proper dental care. This race is designed to raise money and bring awareness to young and old alike. We all learned, February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and that despite the fact that it’s almost entirely preventable, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children. The message of good oral hygiene practices was reinforced with our race packets containing floss, fluoride toothpaste, and toothbrushes, along with our dry-tech race shirts listing out over fifty area dentist by name as sponsors of the race.
Not just for runners looking to compete, this race encouraged everyone to join the race walking or running. Participants registering as walkers, agreed to walk the entire course, and were awarded separate from the 5K run awards their own medals for the top ten walking finishers.
In addition to a nice flat course through a local park, this race had a great vibe of enthusiastic runners and spectators, sporty visors handed out instead of medals for awards (functional and fashionable), a great post race spread of hot cocoa, oranges, bagels and more, as well as numerous door prizes just for participating. None of the three of us won a door prize, but my boys’ ears were peeled when a Cold Stone Creamery gift certificate was awarded to ticket number 585. Additionally the Space Coast Runners award Runner of the Year points to members for participation in this race.
And yes if you are wondering, The TOOTH FAIRY, and several tooth fairy costume wearers were in attendance. We made sure we got our picture taken with her and our very own pediatric dentist too.
We can’t wait to run this race again next year on its new course route in its 19th year!
