Being 8 years old is supposed to be fun. For a kid, being too busy should mean playing outside until dusk every night, not long days filled with hospital visits and treatments. An 8 year old’s biggest problem should be how to treat a scraped knee or a fractured bone, not how to battle untreatable cancer. An 8 year old should be excited about the days ahead and not worried about what his terminal illness will bring. If you think that life is fair, Dorian Murray’s story will change your mind. There is no sense to be made of an 8 year old getting stuck with terminal cancer. But Dorian’s message isn’t one of sadness or pity, this little guy is telling the world that no matter what life throws at you, make the best of it. Do your best to be your best with whatever card you are dealt, no matter how bad it is. Live your life #DStrong no matter what.
In case you are a little out of the loop, Dorian Murray is an 8 year old boy from Westerly, Rhode Island who has been fighting rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare childhood cancer, since he was 4 years old. According to media reports, he and his family learned in late 2015 that his cancer is no longer treatable. They decided to stop treatment and focus on Dorian’s new goal, to become famous before he goes to heaven! I can barely write those words without getting all choked up but then I stop to think about how amazing this really is.
Dorian has shown tremendous strength physically over the past 4 years having to suffer through painful treatments but I am most impressed by his incredible mental strength. His will to continue on with his life, making the best of whatever time he has left here with us is remarkable. If he’s feeling sad, you wouldn’t know it. Social media and celebrity attention have helped Dorian’s wish come true. He has had special visitors such as New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski. January 20, 2016 was proclaimed #DStrong day in Rhode Island and approximately 2500 people gathered on a local beach in support of Dorian, lining up on the shore to spell out #DStrong, which was quite impressive from the sky!
And it’s not just the locals! People all over the world are holding up their #DStrong signs in honor of this courageous young boy, including some of our Runitlikeamom family seen in the photos below.Thank you Dorian for reminding us that life is what you make of it. You’re not only famous worldwide, you’re a worldwide inspiration. You’re wise beyond your years and stronger than many adults will ever be. The world is a better place because your message has been heard and will live on #DStrong long after you are gone.
