A long time ago…okay it was early 2006, but that feels like a lifetime ago, I bought my stair stepper off Craigslist. It became my ‘go to’ workout. It was stored in the basement (in three different houses) so it was always cool, quick and easy. As an added bonus, I could wear whatever crazy outfits I wanted and work out at any hour of the day. Over the past 9 years it has only needed the springs replaced once and no other maintenance has been necessary. It saw me through working crazy busy season hours, a separation, numerous hours studying for the CPA exam, a baby (and earning my pre baby body back!), a divorce, and cancer. It has earned the name ‘Old Faithful’. Old Faithful is committed, devoted, and true to the end.
However, when it is nice out I much prefer running. Also, back in 2006, I got a special, crazy, adorable pup named Trixie. Her first car trip was to pick up my stair stepper, and on that trip was when she was named. She was always up for a run. There were days when it was 90+ degrees and she begged to go out, and there were days it was pouring buckets of rain and she would be begging to go run through the puddles. She dragged me up many a hill and even when we were back home she would still be itching for more. She trained with me when I ran my first half marathon in 2009, and she would have much preferred a full marathon!
Once my daughter came along, it became a bit more difficult to fit in the long runs, but we still managed. Let me tell you, running with a jogging stroller and two dogs is a huge challenge! But we still managed to squeeze out at least a couple of weekend runs. She soon shared the same name ‘Old Faithful’. Old Faithful was committed, devoted, and true to the end.
For the past year Trixie hasn’t been able to live with me, and a couple of weeks ago her body gave out. She had been struggling for several months and the right decision to end her suffering was made. So now begins the training of my next partner. Someday I hope this little one earns the prestigious nickname of ‘Old Faithful’ living up to her fur-sister’s legacy. We’re starting slow, but I have a feeling she will come around! Without doubt, she too is committed, devoted and will be true to the end.
This is dedicated to all the best running partners out there. I’m positive there are many fur running partners that deserve the title ‘Old Faithful’. As for Trixie, she will forever be running through my heart.
