I drive an hour to and from work. This is the kind of commute that can make being on Santa’s naughty list for spewing curse words like Tinker Bell sprinkles fairy dust, seem worth it. But there is one time of year when I actually look forward to sitting at the this-is-taking-forever-again-light for an extra second or two.
I pass Beaumont Farms right before I get on the highway. On a good traffic day, this is the halfway point between home and work. During the holidays, this is also the highlight of an inevitably hectic day. As I’m heading to drop my daughter at school, or rushing to get home for dinner, I get to smile at the winter wonderland these kind, farm folks have created. It’s not about lights, or anything flashy or fancy. It’s about the humor and nostalgia that comes from bringing a memory to life. Last year, they built a 12 foot leg lamp from A Christmas Story. Not only did this make me laugh out loud, it actually upped my holiday spirit! The leg lamp has been a joke in our house for years, to the point where I actually purchased a miniature version for my parents. So it may seem odd, but this display made me feel connected.
I love this year’s set-up for a different reason. Maybe it’s because my daughter is a part of my commute now, or because I’ve seen Frozen a bazillion times…either way Beaumont Farms outdid themselves in the eyes of the Perillo girls. And the smiles prove it.
Wishing you and yours a leg lamp, dancing Olaf, singing Elsa kind of holiday!
