As we approach the fun filled night of Halloween extravaganza, we all ask the question of our little witches and goblins, “What do you want to be?” Well, this year will be one certainly special to the Rizza clan. My kids are going to be firefighters, both of them. Not only a commendable costume, wanting to be a real life hero is very cool to this momma, BUT the fact my daughter has her heart set on being a firefighter persona is this Mom’s dream come true. Breaking the gender barrier and being who you want to be is one of the most important life lessons we can teach our children. The fact my daughter has not wavered once, has thrown me into this awesome head spin. I’ll be honest, I did ask her if she wanted to be a ballerina, princess, etc. and every time she would come back with, “No, I’m going to be a firefighter.”
In a world where we have incredibly deep subject matter for our kids to digest, I hope we can find a way of encouraging them to be who they want to be in life. Breaking down the boundaries we have put up in the past and surpassing them with flying colors of independence and self pride. I will teach my kids that even a firefighter (or whichever profession they choose) can be a kick ass woman or man (and I know some pretty amazing ones myself), or if you want to shoot to be president then do it. Keep the passion and drive to succeed, you may fall, but that’s part of the ride.
So, as I leave you thinking. Sometimes it takes a simple costume choice to show a bigger picture. Sometimes it takes a little girl choosing to be the firefighter and owning it, for you to realize what awesome lessons we can teach our youth, and our youth can teach us.
Signing out with hugs and high fives!
