If you are someone who has been reluctant to start running for whatever the reason, the story of our October Runit mom going from Couch to 5K to 26.2 may inspire you to lace up your shoes and hit the pavement tomorrow! I knew Jane Carlozzi as a co-worker and friend long before she became a runner (and before I became a runner). We now belong to the same running club Run 169 Towns Society. How nice it is to have found this common bond and to have maintained our friendship even after we no longer work together. I stopped working at Jane’s firm about two years ago but still see her regularly at races and keep in touch through social media and texting to line up our race schedules. She is smart, strong and confident but very laid back and easy to talk to. In fact, you would probably only need to talk to her for about two minutes before you would feel like you can call her a friend.
Jane’s Runitlikeamom Run-Down:
*I have 2 grown children – Amanda (28) and Brian (29).
*I am a partner at Nuzzo & Roberts, LLC in Cheshire practicing workers’ compensation defense.
*My favorite ways to stay active are running, triathlons, and classes at the gym…but mostly running.
*Right now, my fitness goal is to finish a full marathon. I have already done several half-marathons and just registered for the Vermont City Marathon on May 29, 2016.
*Funniest things my kids have ever said? Well, that was a long time ago, but I do have a book at home where I wrote down the funny things they said when they were little.
*If stranded on an island, I would hope to have a boat and a fishing pole.
*My favorite indulgence is going out to dinner with my kids.
Being an attorney must keep you pretty busy, how do you find time to run and train for races?
It’s a lot easier to find time for myself now that the kids are grown. I don’t have to be home at a certain time so I can run after work, or before because I don’t have to get anyone ready in the morning except for myself. I don’t watch TV so it’s not that hard for me.
How long have you been running?
I started running in 2012 with a Couch to 5K program, and I ran the HMF Red Dress Run for Women. I just kept on running after that, but I did have some issues with injuries so I started doing more cross-training and joined a triathlon training group which helped. At my age and weight, I can’t run every day so I had to switch it up.
Can you tell us about the Run 169 Club that you are a member of?
The goal is for the members of the club to run a race in every town in Connecticut. I like it for the social aspect of it. I know that I can go to a race alone and there will be people there that I can talk to before or during the race if they run the same speed. Run 169 is for all ages and abilities so you may know people who win the races you go to and also know those who finish last. Everyone is friendly, but I’ve become closest with some of the women about my age who belong to the club.
So the goal of the Run 169 Towns Society is for each member to run a race in every town in Connecticut, how many towns have you run races in?
65 as of this weekend.
That’s amazing! What has been your favorite race so far?
Vermont Covered Bridges Half Marathon was a lot of fun. I ran with my daughter Amanda, my favorite running partner.
How often do you run with your daughter?
We’ve done 4 half marathons together, a 10K, a few 5Ks and a triathlon.
What made you decide to run a full marathon?
It’s going to be a milestone birthday for me next year, and my son lives in Burlington. I thought VCM would be a fun race to have my family there and a few friends from Run 169 run it every year. The course is relatively flat and my goal is just to finish. There is a 6 hour time limit so I’m hoping to finish in under 6 hours. I’m not sure if it will be a one and done or what. We will have to see.
Thank you Jane, for sharing your story and best of luck with your marathon training!
