Yes. This summer I made the decision to bring my daughter to a tattoo parlor. As a family, we decided that seven was an appropriate age to get her ears pierced. While we were vacationing in Burlington VT, a few weeks before her seventh birthday, we decided to visit Body Art Tattoo and Piercing to get her ears pierced.
After researching the topic, there were a number of reasons why I chose the tattoo parlor over the more frequently visited mall jewelry stores. The biggest factor was cleanliness. Tattoo parlors use a disposable, sterile needle to pierce the cartilage of the ear. Most mall stores use the piercing gun, which actually has parts that cannot be fully sterilized.
The second biggest factor was the licensing and regulation of tattoo parlors, which is more stringent than mall stores. The employees responsible for piercings at the tattoo parlor are fully licensed, trained and have experience piercing lots of body parts, not just ears. Also, the way the sterile needle pierces the cartilage has a much higher success rate and is less painful than the way the traditional gun forces the blunt end of a stud earring through the ear.
Our experience at Body Art Tattoo and Piercing was top notch. The employees were highly trained and experienced and spent close to an hour helping to make the experience positive for my daughter – and what an experience it was!
Our trip to the tattoo parlor opened a fantastic dialogue, allowing my daughter to discuss why people choose to have multiple piercings all over their face, why it’s perfectly ok for people to look different, but why it is always important to treat people with respect. My daughter was lucky enough to have the world’s coolest Aunnie come along on the piercing adventure. She even pierced her belly button during the same visit. Making family memories at the tattoo parlor, how fabulous!
So, if you are considering piercing your little one’s ears, I would highly recommend making a visit to your local tattoo parlor!
