We recently lucked upon a kid free Friday night with no set plans, a real treat. The weather had begun to cool down, and it was the perfect evening for a trail run. In addition to anticipating fall for apple picking, yoga pants and pumpkin spice lattes, I’m excited for a different reason, trail running! Hitting the trails is exhilarating. It feels like the start of an adventure, not a workout, but best yet, it is an amazing workout. Not only does it provide an overall cardiovascular workout, but it works all the little muscles in your legs that you don’t feel on a normal run. And as a bonus, it’s a great core and balance workout – just by avoiding the ass-over-tea-kettle stunt.
The icing on the cake you ask? Bringing your fur running buddy off leash!
On this particular day we decided to explore Penwood State Park trails. The elevation change proved to be an excellent challenge that we gladly accepted. You never know what you will find when you head out on the trails with the ever changing scenery, but that day we stumbled on a real treat…
Deep within the forest were piles of rocks creating rock castles (or maybe I’m watching too much Frozen with my 3 year old again!) within a beautiful remote setting. Some of the cairns seemed to be created for artistic purposes, perilously perched within the crooks of several trees.
Other areas appeared to be created to calm all those who entered, a rock zen garden. And then there were the memorials, letters and pictures of loved ones memorialized in beautiful rock. The area felt magical and serene as we explored and walked carefully to avoid disrupting stone creations.
I encourage you to run Penwood and try to find this unique rock display, and maybe add your own touch too!
