Hello. My name is Patty and I am bad at hair.
Seriously, if there is one motherhood role that I have definitely NOT mastered, it’s the role of hairstylist to my little girls. You know those little girls that you see out and about with perfect Elsa braids or double French braids and not one hair out of place? Yeah? Well, those little girls, those girls are not mine!
Try as I might, I am just not good at doing hair. I am not even good at doing my own hair. Complements on my hairstyle most often follow a salon blowout or freakish incident when I had extra time to get myself ready.
Most days, my girls’ hair is messy before we even make it to school, never mind how it looks by the time I pick them up in the afternoon. Sigh.
I tell myself that styling the girls’ hair should be fun but in all honesty, it’s just NOT.
My husband gets aggravated with me because it takes me too long to comb and style the girls’ hair.
My girls get aggravated with me because I take “forever” trying to get their ponytails perfect. I comb too rough. I don’t know how to do the styles they want. I don’t braid like the young teachers at daycare. Their buns fall out. The days change but the hair problems remain.
I get aggravated with my girls because after spending the time and putting forth my best effort to comb, clip and braid their hair, they proceed to play crazy and roll around on the floor which makes their hair look like rats’ nests before we even leave the house. It’s a running family joke that Henry the rat lives in my daughters’ hair.
I’ve tried all sorts of elastics, barrettes, clips, and headbands. It makes no difference. Nothing stays in place for very long. Hair in the face covering the eyes, dangling barrettes, and falling out ponies are all too common in our house.
Recently, my 6 year old has started combing her own hair in the morning. She does a decent job but as you can imagine, this hasn’t exactly decreased our hair problems.
As much as it sounds like I am complaining, I would not dream of cutting the girls’ hair short. I love their silky, golden blonde locks and lucky for me, they are cute even when their hair is all tangled up.
I couldn’t get away with messy (sometimes crazy out-of-control) hair, but they sure can!
