Recently, I have come across a handful of articles filled with opinions on how dreadful and rotten children’s birthday parties are. The articles have been written from both sides, that of the organizer and that of the attendee. While I am inclined to agree with some of the main criticisms (over indulgence, ridiculous spending and lack of time), I disagree with the main premise; parties are a pain the ass!
C’mon, do you really HATE parties?! I tend to think that parties are effing awesome!
Today and forever I will be a crusader of parties. I am a true Good Time Charlie, a party girl, a lover of having a fabulous time.
It makes me sad to see children’s birthday parties getting such a bad rap. While I realize that birthday parties take both time and money, and while I also appreciate that some birthday party factories, are cheap, dirty, and sometimes unsafe places, there are less expensive, memorable ways to celebrate your little one’s birthday. There are countless ways to put a philanthropic spin on a child’s party and to turn the event into an opportunity to give back. Also, parties do not have to be big and over-the-top. All you really need is one friend to turn a normal day at the beach into a beach party!
As a working parent, I find myself always lacking the time for something…laundry, cleaning, running, watching True Detective. With three small children the party invitations are plentiful, but I have to confess, I love parties! I love the opportunity to chit-chat with other moms while our children paint pottery with an artistic adult supervising them. I love catching up with mom friends in the summer while our girls swim and sing happy birthday to each other. While these parties are taking away from other tasks that I would otherwise be working on, I’m happy for the interruption. I am happy to socialize, and happy to know that another little person is feeling the love on their special day, and that my child was able to contribute to that.
I do not discriminate, I love adult birthday parties just as much. I am never too busy to spend time with a friend on their birthday. As a matter of fact, I do not stop at birthday parties, I love all parties! Nothing beats a relaxing summer party at the beach, watching little ones frolic in the sand. Christmas parties, well it is a no brainer…love ’em!
As I have learned this past year, the time in our life is precious…so go ahead, celebrate birthdays, make time to spend fun time with the ones you love and care about. It does not have to be expensive, or glamorous, what it has to be is FUN, and that usually happens organically when you get your faves, your lifers, together.
Love it or hate it, we will party and celebrate all the milestones and silly events life throws our way. Please, stop party bashing and start enjoying the party.
