For the past few years, I heard the buzz about how many people completely transformed their bodies by committing to the P90X and Insanity workout DVD series. As a person who relies heavily on home workouts, I decided it was time to research them. After learning both P90X and Insanity required 6 days of working out per week for up to 90 minutes per session, these were not options for me due to the time constraints.
Early last summer, I saw an advertisement about the Focus T25 DVD workout series ($119.00 plus shipping). The aspect that got my attention was the fact all of the workouts were over in 25 minutes. I loved the thought of being done in 25 minutes. After reading many reviews and viewing before and after photographs, I knew this program achieved results. The routines appeared to be intense, but not any more challenging than what I was doing at that time. As I blogged in the past, it is not the goal to do every repetition on the DVD, but to push myself as hard as I can. After much deliberation, I decided to buy the T25 system. I knew the cost was steep, but I would have weeks of new and challenging workout material. Plus, I was hoping this would help shatter my 5-year weight plateau. On 7/14/14, my Focus T25 workouts arrived. I was so excited to start this journey.
The package included the following:
- 5 Alpha level workouts (The Foundation)
- Speed 1.0
- Total Body Circuit
- Abdominal Intervals
- Lower Focus
- 5 Beta level workouts (The Core)
- Core Cardio
- Speed 2.0
- Rip’t Circuit
- Dynamic Core
- Upper Focus
- Bonus workouts
- Core speed DVD
- Stretch DVD
- Resistance bands (I prefer to use my dumbbells.)
- Workout schedule poster
- Nutrition guide with recipes. (They gave great tips.)
- 5-Day Fast Track (nutrition plan)
I love the packaging as all the disks are neatly encased in a little booklet, making it easy to get access to each disk when needed. Plus, the workout schedule is in the centerfold of the disk packaging for convenience.
The Focus T25 workout schedule consists of a 5-week Alpha cycle and a 5-week Beta cycle. Both of the Alpha and Beta cycles consist of the 5 workouts listed above and require the completion of one 25-minute workout from Mondays through Thursdays. On Fridays, the program requires the completion of two 25- minute workouts. Honestly, I did not expect 50-minute Fridays, but I basically sucked it up and did the 2 workouts anyway. I honestly wanted to see what this system would do to my body.

When I started doing these workouts, I went in with the mindset that I was going to push the hardest I could and hang in there as long as possible. I decided not to beat myself up if I was not able to keep up with the trainers in the video. I greatly appreciated the fact Shaun balanced the moves nicely in that if he killed my legs, the next move would focus on my upper body. I love the Speed 1.0 because we alternate between high impact cardiovascular moves and long stretches. Yes, there is a lot of jumping, squatting, pulling, twisting, planking, and speed work. My body felt nice and sore the first couple weeks I started this program. Then, I noticed my body started get stronger and leaner. The workouts are intense but they go by quickly because each workout is over in less than 30 minutes. Shaun T leads us through a 3 minute stretch at the end of each workout, which feels wonderful.
Last summer, I followed the Focus T25 program for 9 out of the 10 weeks. The reason I did not complete the last week was because I agreed to run the 6.3 mile leg for the Hartford Marathon, and I needed to start training for that feat. Either way, I am definitely happy with the results I experienced in only 9 weeks during last summer.
Since then, I have gone through all the T25 Alpha and Beta workouts in succession for most of my workouts. I keep up with running at least once per week while incorporating the other DVD’s in my workout collection. I do admit, most of my workout time is in the company of Shaun T. His encouraging words help me get through some of the more challenging poses. In addition to the changes in my body, I also noticed improved energy at work and better quality of sleep. When I am ready for level 3, I plan to tackle the Gamma series, otherwise known as “The Strength”.
July 2014 (Alpha week 1)
August 2014 (Beta week 4)
March 2015 (present day)
