There are so many times during the cold season I find myself bogged down; missing the warmth of the sun. Then I realize how many fun things can be done with just some added layers and energy. Sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, snow cave building; the possibilities are endless. I even went as far as to boil water in the microwave and rush it to the 9 degree weather outside to make “magic” my son called it, as Mommy flung the hot water into the air.
Some of my favorite times have been hauling my kids around on a sled, with my snowshoes strapped to my feet, or grabbing my son’s snowshoes (which now really fit my daughter) and having them join in the path making fun. The peacefulness of us in nature keeps me grounded. Listening to us breathe is like meditation. Keeping me focused on the big pictures in life, or what has been plaguing me. It’s also great to get some fabulous adult chat time in with one of my fellow Mommas. It keeps me sane, or I think I potentially could resort to some of my 2 year old daughter’s three sentence banter.
The “Winter Olypmics” was a great childhood memory for me. Our neighborhood was tighter than tight. Like peas and carrots. We would perform a yearly “Winter Olympics” for our parents consisting of ice dancing, snow obstacle courses, and it was always judged with the utmost fairness and hysterical laughter. These memories I want to create for my children, so they can say to theirs, “Lets get up and go find a great hill to sled down.”
Some of my favorite things my family and I have done to get our winters out include:
~ Learning to ice skate at a local pond.
~ Sledding /Snowboarding down our hill.
~ Snow fort building.
~ SNOWSHOEING (Little biased on this one since I have truly fallen in love with this winter sport).
And last, but MOST IMPORTANT inhaling massive amounts of hot Cocoa (spiked for Mommy and Daddy if need be) after each and every fun winter outing!!! Cheers to getting your Winters out!!!
