Do you ever find yourself singing or humming the lyrics of a song throughout the day?
I love music, and I especially love to dance. I find that certain songs remind me of tasks that I complete during the day; music enhances tasks I complete on a daily basis. The songs I most enjoy listening to change with the season, with the ages of my girls, and with my mood.
Like Kate Winslet so accurately described in one of the best winter movies ever, “The Holiday,”
“…you’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for God’s sakes!”
Well, I certainly embrace this notion. I am the leading lady of my own life, and I have quite the kick-ass soundtrack.
Getting out of the house on time in the morning is nearly impossible for me. I am often rushing from the gym, home to shower, and frantically brushing and braiding three sets of hair (I never have time for my own.) I rush to pack and fill backpacks and lunch boxes. By the time I get in the car, all I want to do is turn up the volume, shake it, fist pump, and daydream about my next dancing escapade or party bus adventure.
My current favorite picks for the morning commute, include:
“Day Drinking,” Little Big Town. Because…when it’s all said and done, country has my heart.
“Bailando,” Enrique Iglesias. Enrique reminds me of college. Listening to this Latin crooner transports me back to the late 90’s, Carson Daly, MTV, my college roommate, beer pong and Zimas. His voice fills me with nostalgia. It just so happens that every time I hear this song in the morning it is being played on KIIS-Los Angeles. This reminds me of another good friend from college, who lives a glamorous life in L.A. I’m confident that on certain days when I’m making my 7AM morning commute, she’s just getting home from a wild night of dancing on the west coast!
Let’s also give Enrique a bit of credit…”I wanna be contigo, and live contigo, and dance contigo,” who wouldn’t want someone to profess that to them?
Workday Grind –
What songs give you the lift you need to get through the day?
For me, it’s…
“Stolen Dance,” by Milky Chance, “Riptide,” by Vance Joy, anything off the “Own the Night,” album, by Lady Antebellum, and the occasional Bon Iver. The most important part of work music – it can’t be too much…it has to be the right balance of beat and lyrics to keep you on track. I once listened to “Anaconda” by Nicki Manaj while trying to finish an important report…it didn’t work out so well.
Heading Home –
My heading home music is music I share with my daughters. We are big fans of Radio Disney on Sirius. Some of our favorite, laughter infused, wiggle our hips, shake our heads songs include:
“Shake it Off,” Taylor Swift, “Cool Kids,” Echosmith, “Steal my Girl,” One Direction…and obviously, anything FROZEN!
As much as I love driving to work blasting my music, I cherish the times I get to boogie on down and sing along with my silly girls.
My workouts and races are enhanced by music. Lately, I have been on a big 80’s anthem kick.
“St.Elmo’s Fire,” John Parr, anything and everything by Journey, “Pride (In the Name of Love),” U2, and “Against the Wind,” Bob Seger. In one of my recent races I started to hit the wall, around mile 10. Thankfully, my playlist could sense my desperation, and started to play “Don’t Stop Believin.”
Look at those guys, pure motivation, inspiration, and of course some perspiration!
What am I missing? What songs fuel your life?
