Okay ladies, I have a question for you. How many of you out there wear makeup when you run or work out? I’m not referring to those of you (like me) who run during your lunch hour and happen to be wearing your daily makeup when you lace up your sneaks. I’m more interested in knowing how many of you actually apply makeup before your workouts? Do you only wear makeup to special events like races where you know your picture will be taken, or are you one who tends not to leave the house without a fresh coat of lip gloss regardless of whether you are headed to a business meeting or going out to walk the dog?
I will admit that I have worn makeup to some of my races. I mean, who doesn’t want to try to look their best for that awesome finisher photo? I can’t say I’ve ever glammed it up for a training run, but I certainly never wash my face before logging my miles and so you may find me runningit with mascara, eye shadow and yes, even eyeliner. For me, it’s mostly that I don’t want to take the extra time to wash my face before running. I also tend to think of athletes as naturally beautiful, and so it doesn’t really make sense to me to apply makeup before stepping outside to kick my own ass. Furthermore, I don’t want to clog up my pores and break out.
If you think this is mindless chatter, I apologize but after seeing a post from another member in one of my running Facebook groups, I learned that there are some running beauties out there who are seeking advice on how to sweat like a princess, or in other words, how to stop their mascara from running and prevent the raccoon eye effect while running. I found this surprising!
In sum, I’m all for running it in the buff. I don’t think makeup and running are a good combo, and I know it must be awful for your skin but I don’t feel so strongly about it that I make a point to wash my face before hitting the pavement. On race day, I take the less is more approach and will typically (but not always) wear mascara and a bit of eyeliner.
Do you wear makeup when you run? If so, how do you prevent race day raccoon eyes? If you think the idea of getting pre-race pretty is wacky, tell me why!
