RACE: McKeen Law Firm Race to Fill the Pantry
LOCATION: Riverfront Park in Glastonbury, CT
DATE: Sunday, November 9, 2014
RUNIT RATING: Thumbs up!
Yesterday was a perfect day for a race and Runitlikeamom was ready for action. Full disclosure: I used to work with the wife of Ryan McKeen, whose law firm is the race’s sponsor/namesake. But fuller disclosure: I had nothing to do with picking this race for our Race of the Month series and only decided to participate a few days prior.
“Decided to participate” initially meant “could this be the 5k I run without stopping to walk?” but quickly became “run what you can and walk as needed” after dealing with a sick kid over the weekend, getting poor sleep the night before and nearly vomiting in the car en route to the race. (Sorry, hope you’re not in the middle of dinner.) The other more experienced runners handled the course like champions. Ellen and Robin ran the 5k:
Patty and Emily both ran with (some of) their kids:
Emily even strapped on a backpack for fun! Just kidding, I think she was carrying all of our crap (thanks!). The course was hailed as flat – and thankfully it lived up to the hype. I did notice a surprising amount of litter around the streets of Glastonbury – beer cans, empty cigarette cartons (ok, I didn’t check, but I’m assuming they were empty) and even a cigar. But passing those things made me think I was doing better than some because I was not: (a) littering; (b) drinking; or (c) smoking. Also, race proceeds help support the Glastonbury Food Bank, and runners brought non-perishable donations.
And as for the day, I think we all did a great job and I can only report two minor casualties: some weird bruise that appeared on my foot and a near rollover for this guy when the pavement suddenly turned to gravel:
And here’s the whole gang post-race:
