As you know by now, I play soccer. Being a part of a team runs through my veins, so when my Runitlikeamom ladies were figuring out who was competing in which event for the 2014 NU Hartford Marathon, this past Saturday, I thought, “who will be cheering the team on?” Like I had done with my family vacation post, I wanted to capture my day of spectating through the lens of my phone and with my own Robin goofball twist. (Rock hands!)
“Beep, beep, beep,” went my clock at 5 am (ugh) and I headed downstairs to don my super-cheer look. Of course, I had to take a selfie. But, don’t let me fool you with the peppy expression on my face, I hadn’t had my coffee yet and I was feeling it!
I drove off to go pick up my fellow Runit friend, Jenn, who was one of the members of the marathon relay team. We made a bee-line for the nearest coffee joint and then set out for the city of Hartford! We joined forces with the rest of the Runitlikeamom clan and started our walk to Bushnell Park. I noticed the Hartford skyline and had to snap a shot or two during our journey. As we walked through the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, Sarah turned back to me while I was taking some pictures and officially started the marathon-day-of-cheering, with a great fist-pump.
We were greeted by Runitlikeamom supporter, Marcy, at her Team MAD tent. Team MAD graciously let us hang there, out of the rain, while we waited for the events to start. (Thank you!) One by one, our ladies were summoned to the starting line and I walked with Sarah, Patty and Jenn G. (another Runitlikeamom reader) to their posts. I then ran about a half mile down the street so I could get a great view of the race. With a phone in one hand and a noisemaker in the other, I caught some great shots of the girls as they crossed my path.
Soon after I cheered on the Runit friends going on their way, I started to see runners coming from the opposite direction. I asked around and found out it was the 5k-ers completing their final mile (lucky me!) I waited until I saw Runit lady Meg and her cousin race by with a spring in their step! I then followed them into the medal chute and caught another great marathon moment.
I made my way to the finish line area to watch Sarah and Marcy come in for the half marathon event. It started to rain a lot at this point (yuck) and I had to use the bathroom (double yuck) but I held my ground and crossed my legs, because I did not want to miss the team. My phone pinged and revealed to me an alert that my friend Erin and her twin sister, crossed the finish line. (Crap, I missed them!) I then squinted harder so I wouldn’t miss Sarah…
”Robin!” There she was!!
I screamed! “Go Sarah, you got this!” I was so excited I nearly ran into the poor gentleman next to me. I jogged to the finish line chute to find Sarah and gave her a big Runitlikeamom hug! When we got back to the tent Marcy and Sarah flashed me their half marathon medals that I caught on camera. I then got an incoming text. It was a picture of Runit relay team members, Emily and Jenn H., waiting for their legs to start (super thumbs-up!)
We calculated Patty’s full marathon arrival and set out to go cheer her on at the finish line! Emily and Ellen met up with us and, together, we all eagerly cheered the other runners as we waited for our Runit sister. Emily then belted out “there she is!!” I screamed and nearly dropped my phone in a puddle, but luckily my cat-like ninja moves helped me to capture this lovely lady running by me smiling and waving her arms. I remember thinking how bad-ass she totally was for just running 26 miles at this point and looking as cool as a cucumber. We all got into the spirit of spectating at this moment with the other Runit girls huddled around Patty, chanting lines of encouragement as she passed by.
We weren’t done yet. Coming in on Patty’s coat tails, was Jenn H., with a great marathon relay finish under the Hartford Memorial Arch. We walked by the finish line and as we did the speaker announced “…and with a great finish from Runitlikeamom!” So true my announcer friend, so true.
What a day! At 3pm we were having a beer to celebrate all of the achievements during this event. My overall take away from this day was gratitude. I heard so many runners say thank you to me as I watched and cheered them on. I saw so many athletes helping one another with pace, holding hands to help one another finish, and giving huge high-fives of encouragement throughout the marathon. It is not just the fitness that motivates us – it’s the people who cheer us on along the way that helps us get pumped to score that goal we needed to win, the drive we need to cycle throughout our route, or the encouragement we need to cross the finish line. It was my absolute pleasure to be there for my Runitlikeamom team and friends as they ran the Hartford Marathon because that is what a teammate is for!
