“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see.” Winston Churchill
Earlier this year, I had set myself a goal to not hate running and to complete a 5K in 30 minutes or less. I also set a goal to participate in four 5K races during 2014.
Did I specifically train for running at any point during the year so far? Not really. But my regular workouts do include exercises that build muscle, balance and endurance. Did I run a 5K in less than 30 minutes yet this year? Nope, not yet. Did I participate in four 5Ks? Well, yes, sort of. So what I have I done?
Well, let me tell you. I have participated in three organized straight up 5K(ish) runs. In January I did a 3.4 mile run with some of my fellow Runit Moms and supporters in honor of Meg Menzies, a runner who was struck and killed by a drunk driver; The Max O’Hartford 5K in March; and the Canton Lobster Loop 5K in August. In addition, I participated in two obstacle 5Ks: the Warrior Dash in New Jersey in August, a 5K course with 12 obstacles , and the Rugged Maniac in Massachusetts in September, a 5K course with 26 obstacles. And then, of course, there was the leap way outside my comfort zone in taking on the last leg of the Hartford Marathon as part of Team Runitlikeamom which was an experience like no other.
I have at least one more formal event this calendar year, a two-mile walk with my daughters on Saturday to raise funds and awareness for the endangered African Penguin, so look for a review and summary of that event next week!
Next up…I’m not sure!! While doing the 5.7 mile run for the Hartford Marathon was challenging for me, the fact that I DID IT and didn’t die or end up permanently damaged has inspired me to set some new goals. I’m not ready to share just yet, mostly because I haven’t fully formulated my goals. But I can tell you that I NO LONGER HATE RUNNING!!! I don’t love it as much as some of my fellow Runit friends, but I’ve been thinking…maybe a 10K is next up? We’ll see…
