As you slog through another week of mothering, wife-ing, and working, take a minute and count your blessings. Yes, I remember how exhausting some (most!?) weeks can be while juggling all those roles and responsibilities. While stressful, these years are full of building family memories and traditions; and, afford your children time to watch how you handle life. There are periods in their childhood when they view you as superwoman, a princess (not pejoratively), cordon bleu chef, veterinarian, and champion — and you are! All the while you are working, cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, planning vacations, rearranging work and leisure to take care of them when they stay home from daycare or school. Most of the time you make it look easy and your kids take it for granted they will get what they need from you. What a wonderful gift you are giving to them and what a great job you are doing! They feel loved and safe, and are learning that they too can be all those things when they grow up. As you fall into bed, exhausted, with the list for tomorrow running through your head, try and remember: these non-stop but relatively boring weeks/months/years should be treasured because thankfully, they are not punctuated by serious illness or any of the significant life stressors we all face at some time or another. It is difficult to keep things in perspective, I know. But as you kiss your kids and mate goodnight, say a little prayer of thankfulness that it was just another too-busy, “stop the world I want to get off” type of day — and hope tomorrow will be more of the same!
