The NU Hartford Marathon is a little less than 3 weeks away and I am ecstatic to report that I just wrapped up Week # 15 of my marathon training program. Do you know what that means?!
Well, let me tell you: It means that my final LONG training run is in the past and it is time to taper down! I am elated and so are my legs. I know my husband and kids are excited too. Disappearing for 3 plus hours on a weekend day is not ideal for a mom of 3 young kids but we all survived and this is really important to me so I’m lucky to have a hands-on husband who is more than capable of watching his 3
wildebeasts kids for however long I need him to.
I’m a little sad to report that my phone died just before I hit the 15 mile mark so I don’t actually know how far I ran this past Saturday. I was scheduled to do 20 miles. I believe I did about 19. There is no way I’m going to run that far again until race day so I guess I will never know my true distance and I guess I am as ready as I will ever be.
Throughout my marathon training journey, I have learned so much. Among other things, I’ve learned that: (1) anything is possible if you are willing to put in time and effort; (2) running on a treadmill not only helps you log miles but also helps with mental endurance (which I’m certain will come in handy next month); and (3) you should never, ever skip a meal before a long run.
Since early June, I have ran a grand total of 278 miles! I am feeling ready to finish this thing and proudly slap that 26.2 sticker on our family car. I’ve also been wondering what I am going to do with all the extra time I will have once I am no longer training for a marathon. How will I explain my less than tidy house or the mountains of laundry piled up? How will justify not wanting to cook? What will consume my seemingly infinite thoughts and obsessions about whether or not I will be able to finish the race?
Please leave a comment with your best excuses to avoid cooking, cleaning and laundry, or sharing any last minute words of marathon wisdom. It won’t be long now!
