I am talking about coffee. Since I was in high school, I have been a coffee drinker except during my pregnancies. I started drinking my coffee with Sweet-N-Low and skim milk because I was trying to keep my weight down. Sometime after I got married, I started to use Nestle Coffee Mate Fat Free Creamer because it tasted great in my coffee and it was my way to phase out the use of artificial sweeteners.
Since I made my lifestyle change in 2008, I eliminated most processed food from my diet. Except, I was not willing to let go of my Coffee Mate. I started to think about the chemicals and empty calories I was consuming . Realistically, I was drinking about 3 cups of coffee with 3 tablespoons of creamer in each cup. This meant each cup of coffee I was drinking had 75 milligrams of sodium and 75 calories! Yikes!
It just so happens, my husband, father, and best friend all drink their coffee black. They tried to convince me for a long time to follow in their footsteps because they felt coffee tasted great in its natural form. At first, I did not want to consider it because I could not imagine how coffee could taste good without being sweet and creamy.
About 6 weeks ago, I decided to attempt making a healthier and cleaner version of coffee creamer. I searched the Internet and gave one of the recipes a try. Honestly, the creamer caused the coffee to taste so disgusting; I decided to finish the rest of the pot by drinking it black. I have not turned back since.
At that moment, I took inventory of all the changes I have made in the past 8 years. Before I made some of the changes, I imagined many of them being tough, while others impossible. After weighing the pros and cons, by drinking my coffee black, I would be automatically eliminating 225 calories each day and saving about $300 per year. Since I have made this decision, I have been consistent with it.
To help with the flavor, I sprinkle cinnamon and vanilla powder in each cup. If I want to drink it right away, I add 2 ice cubes. Since I made this change, I have started to enjoy the flavor of coffee. It is too early to say if the changes in my coffee habits are helping with my weight plateau, but I can imagine I will see positive results soon.
How many of our readers made the switch to black coffee? Are there ways you enhance the flavor without adding any calories or chemicals? Please feel free to share your wisdom in the comments section.
