102.3 miles is the number of miles I drove yesterday. This all happened within a 16 mile radius of my house. I probably spent over 5 hours in the car. I was with the kids about half of that time. As I look at the fall schedule for my family, I realize that I am going to be spending a great deal of time behind the wheel. This got me thinking about how I am going to spend my time while driving to and fro. While my kids are in the car, I am hopeful that they will want to tell me about their days and what is going on their lives. As the mother of two teenage boys, the realistic version of the car ride will be some chatter but also some grunting and some silence.
As a stay at home mom, I am truly thankful that I am able to be here to drive my kids around and be home for them when they get out of school. As a stay at home mom, I also feel like my brain is somewhat stagnant. There are not many synapses firing when you are just behind the wheel. If I can be here for the kids and get a workout for my brain, I will be thrilled.
So, how will I choose to spend my time in the car? As much as I would love to use that time to catch up with family and friends, I cannot do that because at this point I don’t have the technology to be truly hands free when calling. The next best thing is to try to enrich my brain while I am schlepping around town. I am going to download podcasts and audiobooks to listen to while am in the car. There is so much information out there to soak up. You can learn a language, listen to a comedy show, catch up on the daily news all from the drivers seat. I think this week I am going to learn some German, listen to NPR’s Fresh Air Podcast and check out the Dave Ramsey Show.
I would love to hear how you spend your time in the car.
