Months ago, when I asked Claire what she’d like to do for her birthday, she said she’d like a purple party and she’d like her friends to sing “Happy Birthday” to her. Easy enough, right? I knew I could make that happen! Purple balloons, purple plates, purple cupcakes- no problem! I had plenty of time to spare, so I began to keep an eye out for purple food to serve- I found purple fruit snacks, purple licorice, even purple yogurt-covered pretzels.
Suddenly, upon entering a store I was able to spot every purple item in a moment’s glance- whether they were suitable for her party or not. Anything with purple packaging seemed to have a glow to it, radiating like a purple light from the inside out. What finally put me over the edge into OCD frenzy? Seeing a picture of purple sugar crystal covered cupcakes on Pinterest. That, my friends, was the beginning of the end…
After consulting with my good friend and insanely talented baker, Andreana (follow her on Instagram @themamadredre), we ordered 5 pounds of loose purple rock candy, and 3 containers of commercial purple food coloring. The next day, I picked up a few cans of purple spray paint, and began looking for things to paint. A table found on the side of the road? Renewed it’s life as a purple table to hold the party favors.
Some rocks from the garden? Now became purple pet rocks, and everyone would be going home with one!
Claire’s dollhouse? A little girl’s dream!
I think you can all see this runaway train taking off now… But wait! It gets better! The shipment came in for Dre to make the cupcakes, however I kept one of the food color containers to see what I could come up with. I had found lots of purple snacks and drinks, however they were pretty much all sugar-laden foods- I had nothing of substance to feed our guests in this mid-morning affair. Initially, I thought of making sandwiches with purple cheese, but it was kinda too much work, to be honest. Bagels and cream cheese? Totally! And I could make the cream cheese purple! Hmm… How about the actual bagels themselves? So I swung into our favorite local bagel shop, and asked if they were up for it- they embraced the challenge! They happily took my order, and my food coloring, and told me to come in Friday for pickup- how cool!!
I know it! Insane! But not as much work as it seemed, which was what I was going for. The weather cooperated, and it was just a matter of putting out all the purple things I’d been collecting. All in all, I succeeded in granting my little girl her wish, and I enjoyed every minute of it! (even if I did get frostbite in my thumb from trying to arrange the drinks in the cooler JUST SO)
