Last September, I had my proudest and most exciting fitness moment to date, crossing the finish line at the Warrior Dash here in Connecticut. In case you missed it, I wrote about the experience earlier this year (http://runitlikeamom.com/2014/01/30/i-would-always-rather-be-happy-than-dignified/).
I will be participating in my second Warrior Dash this coming Saturday, under some very different (and not so different) circumstances. I’ll still have my workout bestie, Carey, with me, because I totally would NOT be able to do this without her encouragement, inspiration and mad organization and planning skills.
Her organization and planning skills were needed because we decided instead of doing the Connecticut Warrior Dash this year, we’d do the one being held in August in Morristown, New Jersey. Which enables her daughters to join us, as well as one of my Super Friends, Wendy, who just happens to be local to the race. And to make it even more exciting, I saw that at least one of my college friends, whom I haven’t seen in (NO I AIN’T GONNA TELL YOU HOW MANY) years is also going to be there, along with her husband/college sweetheart! So I’ll be looking for you, Jen and Phil!!
Also different this year is the fact that Carey and I haven’t been doing any training specifically for the Warrior Dash, but we have both kept up with maintaining or improving our endurance and strength, and, except for a few minor injuries that make us wince every once in awhile, we are undoubtedly more fit now than we were last year.
Again, I have no idea what the obstacles will be, but I’m hoping that we encounter them within a shorter distance than last year. Because the whole running part is fine, but isn’t really why I’m doing this. It’s for the feats of physical strength, the jumping over fire, the MUD, the medal, and of course, THE BEER!!
Added bonus: not only will I get to experience the race again with Carey, plus the added fun of her daughters and Super Friend Wendy, I will get to see a few other friends that are among my nearest and dearest on Friday and Saturday night!
Aside from being away from my family for a couple of nights (to sleep in a quiet hotel room, with no snoring or little people climbing on me at 5:30am saying “Mama, I gotta go potty! Mama, it’s daytime, right?”) (oh yes, I will definitely miss them), this weekend should be pretty flipping awesome.
Let’s just hope I don’t slip off an obstacle and break myself.
I’ll report back next week, hopefully happily intact!
