RUNIT RATING: Thumbs up!
Our Race of the Month for June took place June, 1st in Simsbury and featured 5K, 10K, and half marathon distance runs, plus a kids’ fun run. A distance for everyone! The three distances were run almost simultaneously with the 10K starting 15 minutes before the Half and 5K races. The logistics for the three races and over two thousand runners seemed seamless to this runner. Bibs were color coded, the routes were well marked, and there were plenty of volunteers to direct the way and offer high-fives.
The Iron Horse is a relatively flat two loop course (one loop for the 10K), with no major hills. Runners follow the Farmington River on country roads and run along portions of paved bike paths. Along the route, runners run in and out of shade, past grazing horses (yep actual horses), and through sprays from spectator water hoses (should they choose). It is quite the scenic run. I was very impressed with the number of volunteers supporting the race and the amount of “lawn support” along the route. People sat in their yards cheering, shooting water guns to cool the runners, and even blasting music from their driveways. So while the race route looked like one of my normal training runs the energy surrounding the route was most definitely “go speed racer, go!” And runit we did.
The Runit community had great turnout and great performances in the Iron Horse. Fellow bloggers, Patty, Sarah and I all ran the Half and each of us set individual PRs. My sister-in-law inspired by Kirsten’s 5K training series, ran her first ever 5K. Kirsten was also there running the 5K with her son. My race buddy, Jenna, ran the half with us, while another friend Diane ran her first 10K race.
Congratulations to all in the Runit community who ran the Iron Horse Half, 10K, and 5K on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Please let us know if you were running alongside us and your time.
Such a lovely course and a beautiful race, it’s definitely one to do again!
