RACE: Winter Wonderland 5 Miler
LOCATION: Milford, CT
DATE: January 26, 2014
LENGTH: 5 Miles
RUNIT RATING: Thumbs up!
Our Race of the Month for January took place at the Platt Technical School in Milford, Connecticut this past Sunday.
Blogger Sarah and I participated in the race hosted by the Milford Road Runners and what a frosty adventure we had! There were approximately 280 participants this year, which was more than we were expecting. Temps were bone-chilling, in the twenties, and the wind was whipping but that didn’t stop us!
The 5 mile course made its way through snow covered streets with volunteers stationed at every mile to cheer us on and help keep the roads safe. As an added bonus, they informed us of our times so we could keep track of our pace.
The crowd was small but there were some spectators enduring the brutal temps to show support for runners. The first few miles were tough but once we warmed up and found our rhythm, we enjoyed a nice outdoor run with a group of people who were more than welcoming to us out-of-towners. Sarah and I ran our personal best for this distance despite the frigid air!
Following the race, runners were welcomed inside the school with a smorgasbord of goodies including water, Gatorade, hot chocolate, hot soup with crusty bread, juicy orange slices, crisp apples, and an assortment of sugary sweet donuts. They were even offering free post-race table massages! Runners were automatically entered into a raffle and we were lucky enough to score a family package of baseball tickets for a local team! How can you beat that?
If you are looking for a fun winter race in New England, the Winter Wonderland 5 Miler definitely fits the bill so get out there next year and Runit!
